The Millstad Center

The origins of the property can be traced back to the late 1600s when it was part of the Dunkale estate. Even today, the Millstad grounds still bear remnants of the older buildings, such as the estate entrance and spring house.
Over the course of the next two centuries, the Dunkale estate was divided into smaller parcels, and by the mid-1800s, the area that is now Millstad was transformed into a working farm. During this time, the Great Hall was originally a bank barn with sturdy stone walls, a trussed roof, narrow windows, and a cast-iron bell.
In 1908, the property transitioned from a farm to a place dedicated to children’s education and recreation. One acre of land was used for the Dunkale School, a one-room schoolhouse that had 20 students in 1919. The remaining acreage was transformed into a camp by the Children’s Fresh Air Society of Baltimore, providing city children with a summer getaway. The camp featured amenities such as a swimming pool fed by a creek ( now a concrete Olympic size pool) , nature trails, camp cabins, a theater, baseball fields, and a basketball court.
In 1977, the Hegstad family purchased the property and organized numerous events and activities over the years.
Most recently, the property was acquired by individuals who are dedicated to utilizing it to bring the community together. Today, the property is renowned for hosting weddings, receptions, various events, sports activities and retreats. The property is also known to be home of Harford Gymnastics, Harford Cheer and a few other local small businesses.
Over the last few years the property has boasted many upgrades to better serve the community such as the sports fields, cabins, The Great Hall and more.
